Thatch is a tightly intermingled layer of living and dead stems, roots, rhizomes, plant crowns and other plant parts which develop between the layer of green vegetation and the soil surface that stifles the growth and health of land and turf.
Thatch soaks up water like a sponge preventing water and nutrients from reaching the soil. Reducing thatch levels increases the levels of water, air and nutrients that can get through to the root zone of the grass plants.
Because the thatch layer is plant residue in various stages of decay, it attracts insects and creates a perfect environment for mold and other growths to develop.
Removing the thatch helps the grass by encouraging it to thicken up and also makes it stronger and less susceptible to disease.
